Container, Flat Rack, or Ro-Ro? Choosing How to Ship a Used Excavator from China

Freight is not an afterthought. On a mid-size used excavator, ocean shipping plus origin handling can swing the landed cost more than a few hundred working hours on the meter. The method you choose also decides how much dismantling you accept, how the machine is protected, and which discharge ports are realistic.
Container, Flat Rack, or Ro-Ro? Choosing How to Ship a Used Excavator from China 1

Here is how we usually frame the choice for buyers in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

40FT high cube container — common for mid-size crawlers

Many 20-ton class excavators can go into a 40FT HQ after the boom and stick are folded or partially removed, counterweight taken off if needed, and cabin protected. The big advantage is predictability: container rates are easier to quote, cargo is enclosed, and theft/weather exposure in transit is lower than open equipment.

The trade-off is additional labor at origin and reassembly work at destination. You need a yard that knows how to dismantle without damaging hydraulic lines, plus a clear packing list so your local technician is not guessing which hose belongs where. We photograph every disconnected joint and label bags of pins/bolts by assembly. That sounds basic until you watch a site crew lose two days hunting a missing pin.

Flat rack — when the machine will not fit a box

Larger excavators, some wheel loaders with big tires, and many crushing units sit better on flat racks. Dimensions and weight decide everything. Flat racks expose the cargo, so lashing quality and wrapping matter. Expect higher attention from the shipping line on cargo securing certificates, and plan for possible weather tarps.

Flat rack is often the honest answer for quarry packages where a jaw crusher or screen plant simply will not squeeze into a container without destroying the economy of the shipment.

Ro-Ro — fast when the machine can drive

Roll-on/roll-off works when the unit can safely drive on and off the vessel and when Ro-Ro service exists on your trade lane. It reduces dismantling. It also means the machine sits on an open deck or garage deck with other rolling stock. Battery-disconnect requirements, fuel-level rules, and operating condition become part of the booking checklist.

Ro-Ro schedules are lane-specific. Some African and Middle East routes are strong; other destinations simply do not have practical Ro-Ro options for construction machinery. Always confirm the discharge port before you fall in love with a Ro-Ro quote you saw on a forum.

A practical way to decide

(1)If it is a CAT 320 / Komatsu PC200 / Hitachi ZX200 class machine and your port handles containers well → start with 40HQ.
(2)If width/height/weight break container limits → flat rack, and budget for proper lashing.
(3)If the machine runs, your lane has Ro-Ro, and you want minimal teardown → ask for Ro-Ro and container side by side.
(4)If you are shipping a crusher + screen + excavator package → mix methods; do not force one booking style onto every unit.

One more thing buyers underestimate: destination inland haulage. A cheap ocean rate into a congested port with expensive special transport inland can erase the savings. Tell your supplier the final jobsite city, not only the country. We price export packages with that in mind — machine, export docs, and a shipping method that matches how you will actually receive it.
