How to Choose a Used Excavator Supplier in China (Buyer Checklist)
If you are searching “excavator supplier” or “excavators distributor” from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, or the Philippines, you already know the hard part is not finding machines online. The hard part is knowing who will still answer the phone after money leaves your account.
This checklist is what we walk overseas buyers through before they lock a unit from our Shanghai yard. It is not theory. It is the same filters that stop bad deals early.
1. Ask for stock that exists today—not “available soon”
A real used excavator exporter should tell you what is on the ground: brand, model, year range, hour meter reading, and whether the machine is already cleaned for photos. If every answer is “we can find it in 7–10 days,” you are dealing with a broker who still needs to hunt.It is best for middlemen to be frank and disclose all the real‑world facts. However, trouble will arise if the product photos were taken years ago and the equipment serial number belongs to another machine.
One simple request: please ask your sales manager to place a hand‑written date card beside the machine nameplate and hour meter and take pictures. Slow reply here is a warning.
Don’t just watch it like you’re sightseeing; look at it like an engineer.Check forward and reverse movement, cold start, and ask the operator to do a full 360‑degree swing.Test the boom and arm under load, and inspect the track rollers and sprockets closely.Pay attention to smoke, as it may indicate minor issues with the swing motor or relief valve. The seller doesn’t need to speak very fluent English. You need clear footage.
You need to ask them in advance about their destination port, whether they have received goods via Ro‑Ro vessels or flat‑rack containers before, and who will be responsible for preparing the packing list and commercial invoice.
Add inland haul in China, port handling, ocean freight, import duty, and local transport. A slightly higher FOB price with clean documents and a ready loading schedule often lands cheaper than a “bargain” that sits two weeks waiting for a missing title paper.
5. Agree the deposit rules in writing
Before any deposit, write down: machine identity (model + serial), what happens if the unit fails a re-check, who pays if shipping is delayed by documentation, and which photos/videos are contract references. WhatsApp agreements are common in this trade—just keep them in one thread and restate the final points before payment.
Quick message template you can copy
"Please send today’s photos of serial plate and hour meter, a cold-start video, undercarriage close-ups, and your FOB quote for [model]. We buy for [country]. Confirm Ro-Ro or container option and estimated loading week."
If the supplier answers your questions frankly with no hesitation, that means they have enough ability and confidence to finish this deal. At FSD we keep 380+ units of construction equipment in rotation and export routinely to 80+ countries—but even with us, run the same checklist. Good buyers protect both sides.
